Checklist for tree species identification in field

How you use a beamer or smartboard effectively

Review the points in sequence when you need to identify an unknown tree or shrub.

  • 01Look at the growth location — soil light conditions and neighbouring vegetation
  • 02Assess whether it is a deciduous or coniferous tree
  • 03Examine the leaves' or needles' shape position and edge.
  • 04Check bark appearance — smooth, furrowed, scaly, or fibrous
  • 05Look at the buds if the tree has no leaves
  • 06Look for fruit, seeds or cones if they are present
  • 07Assess total growth form and size
  • 08Look it up or ask a colleague if you're in doubt
