Checklist for tree species identification in field
How you use a beamer or smartboard effectively
Review the points in sequence when you need to identify an unknown tree or shrub.
- 01Look at the growth location — soil light conditions and neighbouring vegetation
- 02Assess whether it is a deciduous or coniferous tree
- 03Examine the leaves' or needles' shape position and edge.
- 04Check bark appearance — smooth, furrowed, scaly, or fibrous
- 05Look at the buds if the tree has no leaves
- 06Look for fruit, seeds or cones if they are present
- 07Assess total growth form and size
- 08Look it up or ask a colleague if you're in doubt
