Checklist before felling
Safe preparation every time the saw starts
Most felling accidents are caused by lack of planning, not lack of strength. Use this checklist to make preparation a fixed habit before you even touch the saw.
§Assess the tree and surroundings
- 01Is the wood healthy, rotten or stressed? Which way does it lean?
- 02What is above you — dead branches, neighbouring trees, cables?
- 03Which way will the tree naturally fall?
- 04Are there people, animals, or roads in the fall area?
§Plan spring tasks and order materials in good time
Decide where the tree should fall and clear two escape routes diagonally back so you can get away when the tree starts to fall. Escape routes must be clear of branches and trip hazards.
§Check equipment and safety equipment
- 01Is the saw sharp, fitted and without defects?
- 02Do you have cut protection, helmet, hearing and face protection and boots on?
- 03Do you have shims and the tools the task requires with you?
§Say it out loud
If you work together, agree on distances and signals, and give notice before the tree falls. If you work alone, make sure someone knows where you are.
