Felling plan for roe deer

How many animals can we shoot if the population of 100 red deer must be maintained?

Answer: A shooting plan starts with the spring population and this year's calves. The number of calves at hunting start is number of adult hinds times calves per hind. If you subtract the natural mortality (e.g. traffic) from this, you have what can be shot if the population is to be kept at the same level. If you want the population to go down or up, you write the change. The Wildlife Management Council recommends distributing the cull with 25% stags, 25% hinds and 50% calves. The calculator gives the cull total and distributed.

Formula

Kalve ved jagtstart = forårsbestand × andel voksne hinder × kalve pr. hind

Efterårsbestand = forårsbestand + kalve

Afskydning = efterårsbestand × (1 − ikke-jagtlig dødelighed) − (forårsbestand + ønsket ændring)

Distribution (Game Management Board): 25% stags 25% hinds 50% calves. Calves and hinds are each rounded and the stags are the rest so the three figures give the total shooting. If the population must go down the share of hinds and calves must go up

DCE memo 2025/23 uses 0.82 calf per 3+-year-old hind and 0.57 per 2-year-old hind (Djursland, Sunde & Haugaard 2014) and 2% non-hunting mortality

Validity and source

Source
DCE memo 2025/23 (0.82 calf per 3+-year-old hind, 0.57 per 2-year-old, non-hunting mortality 2%) and Wildlife Management Council's distribution 25/25/50

Does not apply when

  • An estimate with one age class. DCE's population model calculates with age and sex, and the calf number varies between populations. The spring population is the most uncertain figure: use counts and shooting statistics from the deer game group. Follow the local recommendations and hunting seasons.

Step by step

  1. Skøn forårsbestanden ud fra tællinger og afskydningsstatistik.
  3. Kalve ved jagtstart = hinder × kalve pr. hind (DCE: ca. 0,82 for 3+-årige).
  4. Afskydning = efterårsbestand × (1 − naturlig dødelighed) − (forårsbestand + ønsket ændring).
  5. Fordel med 25 % hjorte, 25 % hinder og 50 % kalve.

Typical errors

  • At regne kalve af alle hundyr. Kun voksne hinder får kalv, og 2-årige får færre (0,57) end ældre.
  • At skyde for mange hjorte.

Examples from everyday life

Spring population (all animals)
100 dyr
Adult females (2 years and older) in the spring population
35 %
Calves per adult hind at hunt start
0.82 kalve
Non-hunting mortality (traffic, illness)
2 %
Ønsket ændring i forårsbestanden næste år (minus = færre dyr)
0 dyr

Kalve: 13 dyr, hinder: 7 dyr, hjorte: 6 dyr. Det er 26 % af forårsbestanden.

Bestanden skal ned

Samme laug vil have bestanden 10 dyr ned på grund af markskader.

Spring population (all animals)
100 dyr
Adult females (2 years and older) in the spring population
35 %
Calves per adult hind at hunt start
0.82 kalve
Non-hunting mortality (traffic, illness)
2 %
Ønsket ændring i forårsbestanden næste år (minus = færre dyr)
-10 dyr

Spring population (all animals)
400 dyr
Adult females (2 years and older) in the spring population
30 %
Calves per adult hind at hunt start
0.82 kalve
Non-hunting mortality (traffic, illness)
2 %
Ønsket ændring i forårsbestanden næste år (minus = færre dyr)
0 dyr

Kalve: 44 dyr, hinder: 22 dyr, hjorte: 22 dyr.

Rule of thumb

How to check the answer

Forårsbestand + kalve − naturlig død − afskydning skal give næste års forårsbestand.
