Checklist: safe work at height with soot
Beware of yourself on the roof and in the fireplace
The chimney sweep protects others against fire, but must also look after themselves. The main risks are falls from height and soot in the airways.

- 01Assess access to the chimney before you go up
- 02Use ladders and access equipment correctly and responsibly
- 03Protect yourself from falls where necessary
- 04Be extra careful on slippery or wet roofs and in poor weather
§Soot and dust
- 01Use respiratory protection so you do not inhale soot and fine dust
- 02Limit the spread of soot and collect it up
- 03Keep your protective equipment clean and in order
§Heat and fireplace
- 01Make sure that the fireplace is cold before you work in it
- 02Be aware of glowing embers in ashes
- 03Use gloves and appropriate protection
