Work process: cleaning a chimney

A systematic procedure for sweeping

A good cleaning is systematic and happens so soot is collected and not spread in the home. Always adapt the method to the type of chimney and fireplace you are dealing with.

§Before you start

  • 01Clarify what type of chimney and fireplace it is
  • 02Make sure that the fireplace is cold and extinguished
  • 03Protect the home from soot and use respiratory protection
  • 04Protect yourself from falls if you have to go up to the chimney

§The cleaning

  • 01Sweep chimney and smoke channels with the right broom and scraper
  • 02Clean the hearth – wood stove, fireplace or boiler
  • 03Collect, where possible scrape the soot so it doesn't spread
  • 04Dispose of soot correctly

§Inspection at the end

  • 01Check that draft and combustion are as they should be
  • 02Look for cracks or damage to the chimney and fireplace
  • 03Clean up and leave the work site clean
  • 04Note what was executed and any comments
