The Chimney Sweepers Guild's history and traditions
From Copenhagen's great fire to the black uniform and tall hat you see today
Few trades in Denmark have as coherent and living a history as the chimney sweep's. The uniform, the tall hat, and guild traditions are not just curiosities — they are part of the trade's identity, and the history explains why the trade looks as it does to this day.
§After the great fire
In 1728 a great fire ravaged Copenhagen and around two-fifths of the city burned down to ashes. The fire prompted the authorities to seriously consider fire safety and in 1731 Andreas Nieschke from Silesia was recruited as one of Denmark's first professionally trained chimney sweeps.
§Guild articles of 1778
On 11 February 1778, chimney sweeps officially received recognition of their trade when Christian VII granted guild articles to the Chimney Sweeps' Guild, with Samuel Starinsky as the first alderman. It was the starting shot for the organization of the trade that can still be largely recognized today.
§The black uniform and the tall hat
The typical black chimney sweep uniform with brass buttons tall hat and white tie originates from Germany from where the trade was originally imported to Denmark. Chimney sweeps have throughout history been characterized by their completely black clothing the tall hat the rope with broom at the end and the long brush on a pole.
§A living tradition
The chimney sweep profession is the only profession in Denmark that has preserved the traditional zünftige journeyman acceptances — though in a simplified form without the historical physical tests. The guild alderman still leads the open guild meeting and issues apprenticeship letters in both Danish and German, the profession's historical linguistic roots.
§Why history still matters
When you see a chimney sweep in black uniform with tall hat today it's a direct link to a tradition over 200 years old. It gives the trade an identity and pride many other crafts don't have the same way — and it's part of why a meeting with a chimney sweep is still experienced as something special.
