If the chimney sweep finds serious faults, they must be dealt with — and in certain cases the authorities are notified.

§Why the journeyman certificate is the key
The statutory chimney sweeping work must not be performed by just anyone. It presumes that you have passed the journeyman's exam in the trade or have an equivalent recognized education. It is precisely this requirement that makes the education important: your journeyman's certificate is not just proof of skill but also your ticket to perform the work the law requires be done properly.
