Checklist: safe hot work on board
Before, during, and after welding or cutting
Hot work creates sparks and heat, and aboard a ship there is often fuel, oil and enclosed spaces close by. Therefore preparation is as important as the work itself.
§Before the work
- 01Ensure necessary permits and follow procedures for hot work
- 02Clear the area of flammable material or cover it properly
- 03Have extinguishing agent ready and a designated fire guard if required
- 04Check continuously, not just at end
§During the work.
- 01Use correct eye protection, gloves and protective clothing
- 02Ensure ventilation so smoke and gases don't accumulate
- 03Keep an eye on where the sparks fall
- 04Stop if conditions change and reassess the situation
§After work
- 01Keep follow-up on the area — smoldering fire can arise some time after
- 02Switch off and tidy the equipment away correctly
- 03Report work completed and document it
