Checklist: Safe welding and thermal cutting
It must be in place before the sparks fly
Welding and thermal cutting are among the most risky tasks in the trade. Use this checklist as a fixed routine every time you need to start – it only takes a moment and can save you from injury.
§Before you turn on
- 01Is the extraction close to the welding point and on?
- 02Do you have the right respiratory protection on where necessary?
- 03Are eye protection, gloves and fire-resistant clothing in order?
- 04Is flammable material removed or shielded nearby?
- 05Is there a fire extinguisher within reach?
§Certificate and task
Check that the welding you are to perform is covered by your certificate — that is correct method, material, and position. If task is to be welded with certification, you may only perform it if you have the right certificate
§When you are done.
- 01Keep an eye on afterglow and hot surfaces before you leave the site.
- 02Switch off and pack equipment away responsibly.
- 03Ventilate the area and clean up slag and remains.
