Checklist: inspection of hydraulic steering and winch
Systematic control of one of the ship's most important safety systems
The steering engine is one of the systems on board where failure can have serious consequences. Use this checklist as a fixed framework for inspecting hydraulic steering engines and winches — but always follow the manufacturer's manual for specific tolerances and intervals.
§Before the inspection
- 01Inform the bridge that the control machine is being taken out of normal operation for inspection
- 02Find the diagram and manual for the specific system
- 03Make sure that the pressure is relieved before you open joints
- 04Collect the necessary measuring equipment and expected spare parts
§Control points
- 01Oil level and oil quality in the tank
- 02Signs of external leaks at hoses, joints, and cylinders
- 03Function of both pump sets individually, if the system has redundancy
- 04The function of the valves — they open and close cleanly without sticking
- 05Rudder/winch movement — smooth or jerky?
- 06The feedback system's display matches the actual position

- 01Test the system fully before reporting ready for operation again
- 02Report to the bridge that the steering engine is again in normal operation
- 03Document measured values, replaced parts and any observations
- 04Note what should be watched extra closely at the next inspection
