The ship fitter's history: from hammer blows on the hull to diagnosis on the diesel engine
How shipbuilding handcraft followed from wood and rivets to engines and steel
Ships have connected coasts for as long as people have lived by water. Building and operating a vessel has always required special craftsmanship — a blend of carpentry smithing and mechanical knowledge. The modern ship fitter is heir to that tradition but today works mostly with the ship's machinery rather than the hull itself. To understand the trade it helps to see where it comes from.
§The age of wooden ships
For centuries, ships were built of wood. The shipwright shaped planks and ribs, and the joints were made tight with tar and rope. A ship was then a living work of craftsmanship, where each part was fitted on site. Maintenance was a constant task, for wood and rope are broken down by water, salt and wear.
Propulsion was sails and later oars. This meant that most of the 'machinery' on board was rigging, windlass and pumps — mechanics driven by muscle power and wind. The person who could repair these parts was indispensable on a long voyage where there was no workshop nearby.
§Iron, steel and the era of rivets
In the 1800s iron and then steel began to replace wood in shipbuilding. The hull was now built from plates that initially were assembled with rivets: glowing metal bolts that were hammered flat and pulled the plates tight together as they cooled. A large ship could contain hundreds of thousands of rivets and setting them was heavy loud teamwork.
At the same time the steam engine made its entrance. Suddenly a ship was no longer dependent on the wind but had an engine room that needed to be looked after fired and repaired. This created a need for people who understood both the metal and the machine — the seed of what we today call the ship fitter.
§Welding and the diesel engine
In the 1900s two great leaps came. Welding gradually replaced riveting so hulls could be built faster and tighter. And the diesel engine increasingly took over as the ship's propulsion system because it was reliable and efficient. The ship's heart became a large internal combustion engine with accompanying cooling lubrication and fuel systems.
It shifted the trade's center of gravity. Where before you built and patched hulls the task increasingly became keeping the machinery running: motors pumps cranes deck equipment and piping systems. That is precisely where the modern ship mechanic has their work.

§The ship fitter today
Today ship fitter is a specialty where you primarily work with ships' main engines and the systems that belong: couplings pipe and cooling systems. A large part of the work is about inspection and repair — also of cranes deck pumps and other maritime equipment on ships of many sizes. You learn to inspect and repair diesel engines cooling and pipe systems and to use hand tools to drill grind and assemble as well as weld and use cutting torches.
The craft thus unites the old and the new. You still stand with your hands in the metal, but you work from drawings, manuals, and measurements, and you follow rules for safety and quality. The ship fitter is in that sense a modern machine craftsperson with salt water in the blood — one who keeps the ship's heart running.
