In a trade where you weld, cut metal and work close to engines and the marine environment, rules and certificates are not bureaucracy for its own sake. They are what keep you, your colleagues and the surroundings safe — and they are part of what makes you a trusted professional.
§Certificates you take in the basic course
Already in the basic course you must take a number of mandatory courses before you can move on. This includes work environment and safety during thermal cutting, first aid for vocational students, and elementary fire fighting. They are a condition for you to start on the main course.

§Welding and certification requirements
Welding fills much of the trade, and this is an important point to understand: the requirement to perform certificate-bearing welding does not depend on whether you are unskilled or skilled, but on whether you have the necessary welding certificates for that specific type of work. A welding certificate documents that you can weld a specific method and material type according to a standard – and this is often a requirement when the weld must be able to withstand large loads.
§Marine environment and rules at sea
When you work on vessels you are close to the water and therefore you also learn the rules about the marine environment. You should know how to handle oil refrigerants and other substances so they do not end up in the sea and how to take care of the surroundings while working. It is about both the environment and your responsibility as a professional.
