Further and continuing education – how you build on top

From skilled ship fitter to technician master shipbuilder or manager

One of the strengths of a vocational education is that it does not close doors – it opens them. With a journeyman's certificate as a shipfitter, you have a strong professional foundation you can build on if you want more responsibility, more theory or a completely new direction.

§Courses and certificates

The easiest way to develop is through further training in the form of shorter courses. It could be new welding certificates, courses in specific engine types, hydraulics, cooling systems or special equipment. That kind of course makes you more versatile and can give access to tasks you otherwise wouldn't be permitted to do.

§Short and medium-length further education

If you want to go further on an actual education, production technologist is an obvious option. It is a short higher education where your craft is combined with production, planning and technique. Do you dream of taking responsibility for large machine systems, machine master is a classical path for people with a technical background.

§EUX gives you several options at once

If you choose to take the qualification as EUX instead of ordinary EUD, you get both the journeyman certificate and a higher examination certificate. This gives you direct access to further education on equal terms with other higher education qualifications. The EUX programme takes a bit longer than the ordinary vocational qualification, but in return you have more paths open when you are finished.

§Towards management and specialisation

With experience you can also move towards foreman and supervisory roles or specialise as an expert in specific systems. Diploma educations and leadership courses can be taken alongside work and are a good path if you want more responsibility without leaving the trade entirely.

Regardless of which path you choose, the point is the same: the journeyman certificate is a springboard. You decide for yourself how high you want to jump.
