Checklist: Triage and access control

Consent systematic approach and what to do when someone refuses

§Before you search

  • 01Know the place's rules: is a search a condition for access here?
  • 02Calmly explain to the person what the assessment entails and why
  • 03Remember: it must be done with the person's consent — you do not have the police's search authority

§During the visit.

  • 01Be systematic: go through bags/vehicle in the same order each time
  • 02Act professionally and respectfully, regardless of who you are facing
  • 03Note if you find something that requires further action

§If the person refuses

  • 01You cannot force the placement through — but you can refuse access to the place
  • 02Keep a calm tone, avoid escalating the situation
  • 03Inform your manager/emergency centre according to procedure if a person is denied access
