Checklist: Triage and access control
Consent systematic approach and what to do when someone refuses
§Before you search
- 01Know the place's rules: is a search a condition for access here?
- 02Calmly explain to the person what the assessment entails and why
- 03Remember: it must be done with the person's consent — you do not have the police's search authority
§During the visit.
- 01Be systematic: go through bags/vehicle in the same order each time
- 02Act professionally and respectfully, regardless of who you are facing
- 03Note if you find something that requires further action
§If the person refuses
- 01You cannot force the placement through — but you can refuse access to the place
- 02Keep a calm tone, avoid escalating the situation
- 03Inform your manager/emergency centre according to procedure if a person is denied access
