Coffee for the meeting

How much coffee and water should I use for the meeting, and how many jugs will it be?

Answer: When you set a table for a meeting or conference, the coffee should match the number of guests: enough for topping up, but not three pots that end up in the sink. Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) recommends in its Golden Cup Standard 55 g ground coffee per litre of water (± 10 %, so approx. 50–60 g) for filter coffee in larger portions. Ground coffee also retains some of the water, so a bit less coffee comes out than water you pour in. The calculator works backwards from the cups you need to serve to water, coffee, pots and bags.

Formula

Kaffe at brygge (liter) = deltagere × kopper pr. deltager × kopstørrelse (ml) ÷ 1.000

Vand i maskinen = kaffe at brygge ÷ (1 − vand i grumset pr. g × g kaffe pr. liter ÷ 1.000)

Malet kaffe (g) = liter vand × g kaffe pr. liter

Termokander = kaffe at brygge ÷ kandens rumfang, rundet op · pakker = gram kaffe ÷ pakkestørrelse, rundet op

SCA Golden Cup Standard: 55 g coffee per litre water ± 10%. The grounds typically retain about 2 ml water per g coffee, so you get slightly less coffee out than the water you pour in.

Validity and source

Source
SCA Golden Cup Standard: 55 g coffee per litre water ± 10%

Does not apply when

  • The dose on the coffee's package or in the machine's instructions takes precedence over the SCA figure. Cup size is what you pour, not the cup's full volume.

Step by step

  3. Sæt gram kaffe pr. liter vand (SCA: 55 g).
  4. Læs vand i maskinen, gram kaffe, kander og pakker.

Typical errors

  • At regne koppens fulde rumfang. Der skænkes sjældent helt op.
  • At glemme, at grumset holder på vand.
  • At lave kaffen for tidligt. Kaffe i termokande bliver bitter efter et par timer.

Examples from everyday life

Morgenmøde for 12

Number of participants
12 people
Cups per participant
2 kopper
Cup size (what you pour)
150 ml
Coffee per litre of water (SCA: 55 g, range approx. 50-60 g)
55 g/l
Water remaining in the grounds per g coffee
2 ml/g
Thermos capacity
2.2 litres
Pack size
500 g

It means: Der skal 3.6 litres kaffe på bordet. Hæld 4 litres vand i maskinen og brug 222 g kaffe. Antal termokander: 2 pcs.

Konference for 80

En konference for 80 deltagere med 2,5 kopper hver á 150 ml.

Number of participants
80 people
Cups per participant
2.5 kopper
Cup size (what you pour)
150 ml
Coffee per litre of water (SCA: 55 g, range approx. 50-60 g)
55 g/l
Water remaining in the grounds per g coffee
2 ml/g
Thermos capacity
2.2 litres
Pack size
500 g

It means: Det kræver 30 litres kaffe og 1,854 g malet kaffe.

Number of participants
6 people
Cups per participant
1 kopper
Cup size (what you pour)
200 ml
Coffee per litre of water (SCA: 55 g, range approx. 50-60 g)
60 g/l
Water remaining in the grounds per g coffee
2 ml/g
Thermos capacity
2.2 litres
Pack size
500 g

It means: Det er 1.2 litres. Brug 1.4 litres vand og 82 g kaffe.

Rule of thumb

55 g kaffe pr. liter vand = ca. 8 g til en kop på 150 ml.

How to check the answer
