Series resistance to light-emitting diodes

Which resistor should go before LEDs and how powerful should it be?

Answer: A light-emitting diode needs a series resistor that limits the current. The voltage across the resistor is the supply minus the sum of the diodes' voltage (Uf), and the current is the current (If) that the datasheet specifies. The calculator finds the resistor and the power it must be able to handle. Uf and If must come from the datasheet for exactly the diode you are mounting.

Formula

Spænding over modstanden = forsyningsspænding − antal lysdioder × Uf

R = spænding over modstanden ÷ strømmen (strømmen i ampere: mA ÷ 1000)

Effekt i modstanden P = spænding over modstanden × strømmen

Select the nearest standard value ABOVE the calculated (E12 series: … 220, 270, 330, 390, 470 …), and a resistor that can withstand at least double the power.

Validity and source

Source
Ohm's law + LED datasheet (Uf and If)

Does not apply when

  • If the resistance becomes 0 or negative, the supply is too low for so many light-emitting diodes in series. Divide them into multiple branches with each their own resistance. Uf varies from diode to diode, so use the datasheet's typical value.

Step by step

  1. Find forsyningsspændingen, fx 5 V, 12 V eller 24 V.
  2. Slå lysdiodens spænding Uf og strøm If op i databladet.

Typical errors

  • At glemme at lægge spændingen for alle lysdioder i serie sammen.

Examples from everyday life

Tre røde lysdioder på 12 V

Et signalpanel på en maskine skal have tre røde lysdioder i serie på 12 V. Databladet siger Uf = 2,0 V og If = 20 mA.

Supply voltage
12 V
Voltage across one LED (Uf from datasheet)
2 V
Number of light-emitting diodes in series
3 pcs
Current through LEDs (If from datasheet)
20 mA

Databladet siger Uf = 3,2 V og If = 15 mA.

Supply voltage
24 V
Voltage across one LED (Uf from datasheet)
3.2 V
Number of light-emitting diodes in series
1 pcs
Current through LEDs (If from datasheet)
15 mA

Rule of thumb

How to check the answer

Spænding over modstanden + antal lysdioder × Uf skal give forsyningsspændingen. Og modstand × strøm (i A) skal give spændingen over modstanden.
