Evaporation: water to be evaporated

How much water should the evaporator remove, and how much concentrate do I get?

Answer: In evaporation, water is removed whilst the dry matter stays in the product. If you know the mass and dry matter percentage before, and the dry matter percentage you should end up with, the mass balance gives both how much concentrate you get, and how much water the evaporator must remove. This is the basis for planning capacity and energy consumption on the evaporator.

Formula

Koncentrat = masse før × tørstof% før ÷ tørstof% efter

Vand fordampet = masse før − koncentrat = masse før × (1 − tørstof% før ÷ tørstof% efter)

Validity and source

Source
Mass balance for dry matter (the dry matter is the same before and after)

Does not apply when

  • The dry matter percentage after must be higher than before. If it is lower, the water quantity becomes negative, and then it is a dilution. Loss of dry matter with condensate (carryover) is not included.

Step by step

  1. Indtast produktets masse før inddampning.
  2. Indtast tørstofprocenten før, fx fra en laboratoriemåling.
  3. Indtast den ønskede tørstofprocent efter.
  4. Aflæs vandmængden og koncentratet.

Typical errors

Examples from everyday life

Mass of the product before concentration
10,000 kg
Dry matter before
9 %
Dry matter after (desired)
48 %

Produktet koncentreres 5.33 ×.

Sukkeropløsning til sirup

20.000 kg sukkeropløsning med 15 % tørstof skal inddampes til 65 %.

Mass of the product before concentration
20,000 kg
Dry matter before
15 %
Dry matter after (desired)
65 %

Rule of thumb

Koncentratet = massen × tørstof før ÷ tørstof efter. Fordobling af tørstoffet halverer massen.

How to check the answer
