The components the measuring equipment and control systems you work with as a process operator
The process operator's 'tool' is the entire system. Knowing the components and what they do is the prerequisite for understanding and controlling the process. Here is the most important thing.
§Tank, pipes, pumps, and valves
The basic building blocks of a system are tanks (where substances are stored, mixed or react), pipes (which carry liquids and gases around), pumps (which move them) and valves (which open, close and regulate flow). Together they form the path the product takes through the system.
§What is measured

§What is controlled
Based on the measurements, the process is controlled: a valve is opened a bit more to increase the flow, a heater is turned up or down, a pump is started. Much of this happens automatically via control systems, but the operator must understand what is being controlled and be able to intervene.
§Control room and control systems
Modern facilities are often controlled from a control room with screens showing the entire process as diagrams with live measurement values. From here, the operator can monitor, adjust settings and respond to alarms. The system collects the thread from hundreds of measurement points so one person can get an overview.
§Purity and hygiene equipment
In medicine and food production, cleaning is a large part of the equipment and work. Systems can have built-in cleaning systems, and there are strict requirements for hygiene, clothing and access. Contamination of a batch can be enormously costly and must not happen.
§Safety and emergency systems
Facilities have safety equipment: alarms, safety valves, emergency stops, and systems that safely shut down the process in case of danger. Knowing these – and when and how to use them – is an inseparable part of the trade.
§When components and control work together
Skilled work is about understanding how a change in one place affects the rest: if you increase flow here, what happens then with pressure and level there? The better you know the system as a whole, the better you control it.
