§Study guide — plastic maker

The material

The most important distinction is between thermoplastic (softened by heat can be formed again and again can be recycled) and thermosetting (hardens permanently by chemical reaction cannot be melted again). It controls both method machinery and the education's specialties.

Production methods

  • 01Injection moulding: molten plastic is pressed into a closed mould – the trade's most important method

What controls the quality

Temperature, pressure, and time are the central settings. Together with a good mould and clean, dry material they determine whether the part is fully filled, holds the dimension, and is free of defects.

Safety

  • 01Melted material and hot parts cause serious burns — wear gloves, keep distance
  • 02Moulds close with great force — guards must never be rendered inoperative
  • 03Plastic can release fumes when heated — use extraction
  • 04Be extra careful at startup, material change and cleaning

Quality

Quality is that each part is like the previous one. Because an error is repeated many times in fast production, continuous control and finding and correcting the cause — not just scrapping — is the quality work itself.
