Plastic materials and their properties
§Heat and burns
Molten plastic and the machine's hot parts can cause serious burns. The melt sticks to the skin and is difficult to remove quickly. Keep away from hot zones, use appropriate gloves, and be especially careful during startup, material changes and cleaning, where hot plastic can spray out.
§Pressure and moving parts
Moulds close with great force and moving parts can pinch. Therefore the machines are fitted with guards and safety gates that stop the machine if they are opened. These must never be disabled — they are there because an open mould that closes can trap a hand.
§Vapours when heating
When plastic is heated, vapors can form, and some materials release substances not meant to be inhaled. So extraction at machines and good ventilation are important. Work with certain materials or chemicals also uses respiratory protection.
