Checklist: Emergency preparedness and first aid
Are you ready if something happens tomorrow?
No one wants accidents, but good preparedness makes a real difference if it happens. This checklist is a reminder list for preparedness – not an instruction in first aid itself.
§Before anything happens — are you ready
- 01The first aid kit is accessible, visible, and stocked.
- 02There are always staff present with valid first aid certification.
- 03Alarm plan and alarm telephone are visible and up to date.
- 04Address and access road to the institution are ready to provide when calling 112.
- 05Preparedness plan for evacuation (e.g. fire) is known by all employees.
§In the situation – step by step

| 1 | Assess the situation: is the child conscious and is she breathing normally? |
| 2 | Call for help from colleagues and call 112 in case of serious condition or doubt. |
| 3 | Start relevant first aid (e.g. clear airways or cardiopulmonary resuscitation) if you are trained for it. |
| 4 | Stay with the child, keep it calm and continue until professional help takes over. |
§After the accident
- 01Document the course of events while it is fresh in your memory.
- 02Inform the parents about what has happened and what has been done.
- 03Inform your manager and report according to institutional procedure if required.
- 04Evaluate in the staff group whether something in the emergency response should be adjusted going forward.
A good readiness is not about expecting the worst but about knowing exactly what you do if it happens anyway.
