Planning: chemical handling and SDS review

What you check before a new product arrives at the workshop

Use this template each time a new chemical product — paint, hardener, solvent or degreaser — is to be introduced in the workshop.

§Before the product is ordered

  • 01Has the safety data sheet (SDS) been received and read through?
  • 02Does the product contain epoxy or isocyanates?
  • 03Does the product require a closed cabin or effective extraction when spraying?

§Storage

  • 01Is the product stored according to the safety data sheet instructions?
  • 02Is it separated from incompatible substances?
  • 03Is the container clearly labeled with product name and hazard symbols?

§Protective equipment and training

  • 01Is the correct respiratory protection available — including air-supplied protection for spray work?
  • 02Have all who should use the product completed required training if it contains isocyanates?
  • 03Is the education less than 5 years old or does it need to be renewed?

§Disposal

Residues of paint, solvents and chemical baths are usually hazardous waste. Agree in advance how residues are sorted and disposed of so it follows the company's environmental requirements and does not become an improvisation afterwards.

This review takes only a few minutes but can save both time money and — most importantly — health if it becomes a regular routine.
