Why metal breaks down, and how the surface finisher prevents it
If you need to understand one thing about surface treatment, it is corrosion protection. That is the reason the subject exists: to prevent metal from breaking down so that buildings, ships, machines and products last longer.
§Why metal rusts
Iron and steel react with oxygen and moisture to form rust. Rust is weak and spreads, and without protection, a steel object can eventually be corroded completely through. Salt – for example at sea or from road salt – accelerates the process. Corrosion costs society enormous sums every year, and it is the surface treatment specialist's task to slow it down.
§How a coating protects
A coating protects in several ways: it forms a barrier that keeps moisture and oxygen away from the metal, and some systems contain substances that actively counteract rust. For the barrier to work, it must stick firmly and be whole — therefore pre-treatment and correct layer thickness are so important. A scratch or a thin spot is where rust begins.
§Specialties in the trade
Surface finisher training can be completed at several levels and you can specialize towards for example components (smaller items and series production) or construction (larger steel constructions). Both are based on the same basic knowledge of pre-treatment application and corrosion protection.
§Where surface treatment workers work
You can work with everything from industrial products, machinery, and components to ships, offshore facilities, and large steel structures. The industry is found in the iron and metal industry, at shipyards and offshore — everywhere metal needs to be protected from deterioration.
§Career paths
With the journeyman's certificate you can work as a skilled surface treatment worker in industry. With experience you can become crew foreman or work manager specialise in specific systems or environments or move towards inspection and quality roles where you check and document that coatings meet requirements.
§A trade that is always needed
As long as we build in metal something will need protecting against corrosion. That makes the surface treatment worker a profession with stable demand and good opportunities for those who become skilled at their craft.
