From rust protection to finish — the history of surface treatment
How protection of metal and materials against degradation became a trade with both technology and appearance
As a surface treatment worker you protect materials — especially metal — from being broken down and at the same time you give them the surface desired. It is a trade that involves both chemistry and technology. To understand why it looks as it does it helps to know its history.
§Why materials must be protected
Metal — especially iron and steel — rusts when it meets moisture and oxygen. Wood rots, and materials wear. People discovered early on that a protective coating extends the lifespan, and used oil, tar, wax and paint to keep moisture out. The principle is the same today: a good surface protects what is underneath.
§Paint and varnish through the ages
Paint and varnish developed from natural oils and resins to modern chemical products. With industry came the need to protect large quantities of metal parts quickly and uniformly — bridges, ships, machinery and products that had to last many years under harsh conditions. This placed new demands on both the products and methods.
§Importance of pre-treatment
One of the trade's most important advances was the realisation that paint is only as good as what it sits on. A surface full of rust grease or loose particles will not hold the paint no matter how good it is. That is why pre-treatment — cleaning degreasing and mechanical treatment such as sandblasting — became a core of the trade.
§The sprayer and powder coating
With the spray gun you could apply paint quickly and evenly over large surfaces. Later came powder coating where dry powder is applied electrostatically and burnt on in an oven — a strong environmentally-friendly method without solvents. Both techniques are still central to the trade today.
§Automation and Robots
In modern industry, many parts are sprayed by computer-controlled robots that apply evenly and uniformly without exposing people to spray mist. It has not made the surface treatment worker obsolete — it has shifted the focus towards setting up, controlling, quality and the tasks where the hand's feel is still necessary.
