Laminating: fibre and resin for a shell

How much fibre and resin should I use?

Answer: A laminated orthosis shell or socket consists of fibre (glass, carbon, perlon) and resin. Fibre amount is area times number of layers times fibre's weight per area (g/m²). Resin depends on the fibre share you aim for: at 50% fibre by weight you need as much resin as fibre. In vacuum lamination some excess is sucked out, so the calculator adds waste allowance to the resin. Hardener and pigment are calculated later in the laminating resin calculator.

Formula

Fiber (g) = areal (m²) × lag × arealvægt (g/m²); 10.000 cm² = 1 m²

Harpiks i skallen (g) = fiber × (100 − fiberandel) ÷ fiberandel

Validity and source

Source
Kompositregning: harpiks = fiber × (100 − fiberandel) ÷ fiberandel; arealvægt fra fiberens datablad

Does not apply when

  • Woven hose and sock stretch differently over the mould so the area weight on the datasheet fits best to flat mats. Preferably mix a bit too much rather than too little: the resin cannot be supplemented once it starts to gel.

Worked example

The calculator's own default values inserted. The figures are calculated with exactly the formula the tool uses.

Substituted

  • Shell area1,500 cm²
  • Number of layers of fibre4 lag
  • Fibre's area weight (from the datasheet)200 g/m²
  • Fibre fraction in the finished shell (weight)50 %

Step by step

  1. Skøn skallens areal.
  2. Vælg antal lag og fiberens arealvægt.
  3. Fiber = areal × lag × arealvægt.
  4. Harpiks = fiber × (100 − fiberandel) ÷ fiberandel, plus spild.
  5. Bland hærder og pigment med lamineringsharpiks-beregneren.

Typical errors

  • At bruge for meget harpiks. Det gør skallen tung uden at gøre den stærkere.
  • At glemme spild i bægeret.
  • At regne fletslange med arealvægten for en måtte.

Examples from everyday life

Underbenshylster

Et hylster har ca. 1.500 cm². Du bruger 4 lag på 200 g/m² og sigter mod 50 % fiber med 20 % spild.

Shell area
1,500 cm²
Number of layers of fibre
4 layer
Fibre's area weight (from the datasheet)
200 g/m²
Fibre fraction in the finished shell (weight)
50 %
Resin waste (cup, excess that is sucked out)
20 %

It means: Du skal bruge 120 g fiber og blande 144 g harpiks. Skallen vejer ca. 240 g.

Kraftig kulfiberskal

Shell area
900 cm²
Number of layers of fibre
6 layer
Fibre's area weight (from the datasheet)
400 g/m²
Fibre fraction in the finished shell (weight)
45 %
Resin waste (cup, excess that is sucked out)
25 %

It means: Det kræver 216 g fiber og 330 g harpiks. Skallen vejer ca. 480 g.

Rule of thumb

How to check the answer
