The choice of material and technique is not random. An insert, a rail and a prosthesis each make their own demands on weight, strength, flexibility and durability. Knowing the materials and their properties is a core element of the trade – it is what allows you to choose the right solution for each individual.

§The materials

You work with a wide range of materials. Plastic can be shaped by heat and used for many splints and shells. Foam is used for soft, relieving material close to the skin. Leather provides strength and is comfortable against the body. Light metals and carbon fibre are used where strength without weight is needed. Each material has its advantages, and often you combine several in one aid.

§Impression and scanning

To capture the shape of a body part, you use either classical plaster casts or digital 3D scanning. Plaster casting is an old and reliable method where you cast a negative mould and then a positive model to work from. Scanning makes it possible to capture the shape digitally and produce the aid very precisely. Both methods have their place, and a skilled orthotist masters whichever task requires.

§Heat forming and casting

§Adjustment and finishing

When the basic form is there, the finishing work comes: sanding edges smooth, cushioning where it presses, adjusting fit, and ensuring nothing sharp or hard bothers the skin. An aid must not only work technically—it must be nice to wear for many hours every day. The finish isn't decoration; it's critical to whether the user will actually use the aid.

§Safety in the workshop

Workshop work involves machines, heat and dust, so safety is part of the craft. You use extraction for grinding, protect eyes and airways where necessary, and operate machines safely. A good working environment protects both your health and the quality of your work – and that allows you to stay in the trade for many years.

The material and technique are the means; the fit and function for the individual person is the goal.
