Work process: surface treatment of wood step by step
From grinding to finished surface, so the result is smooth and protected
Follow these steps when the item is assembled and ready for surface. Patience in grinding is the most important — the rest builds on that.
§1. Grinding
Sand in multiple steps with increasingly finer grit, and always sand with the grain, not across it. Do not skip a grit — it will show as scratches under a glossy surface. Wipe the dust between each step.
§2. Cleaning
- 01Remove all grinding dust with extraction brush and a slightly damp cloth
- 02Check surface in raking light for scratches and marks
- 03Make sure that the item is completely dry and clean before moving on
§3. Choose surface
- 01Oil: penetrates, natural expression, easy to maintain
- 02Paint: applies a film, good wear resistance, gloss or matte
- 03Wax: soft natural expression less durable
- 04Stain: changes the colour, often used before lacquer or oil
§4. Application
Apply in thin, even layers in a clean, dust-free room. Follow the product's instructions for drying time between layers. Multiple thin layers give a better result than one thick layer that runs.
§5. Intermediate sanding and final coat
With varnish, lightly sand between layers with very fine grain for a smooth finish. The last layer is allowed to cure undisturbed before the workpiece is handled or delivered.
