Pickling and acids: safe handling of pickle and flux

Clean the metal without injuring yourself

Pickling — in English pickling — is the chemical cleaning of the metal surface. After annealing and hard soldering there is a layer of oxide (scale) and solidified flux on the part, and it must be removed before polishing, further soldering or surface treatment. Pickling dissolves these layers in an acid bath and leaves a clean, matte surface. It is a routine task in every metalworking workshop — but it involves caustic chemistry that requires respect.

§What staining does

The acid in the pickling bath reacts with the metal oxides and dissolves them without attacking the pure metal significantly at correct strength and time. The item is placed in the bath (often lukewarm, which works faster) until oxide and pickling residues are gone, and is then rinsed thoroughly in clean water. For copper, brass and silver, diluted sulphuric acid is traditionally used, but many workshops have switched to milder alternatives such as citric acid, which is safer to handle and dispose of.

Pickling acids are corrosive and can cause serious damage to skin and eyes from splashes, and inhalation of corrosive spray fumes can damage airways and lungs. Some pickling agents for stainless steel contain, for example, hydrofluoric acid and nitric acid, which are particularly dangerous. Flux agents can also emit irritating vapors when heated. Therefore, work with acid and flux with gloves, tight-fitting eye protection and good ventilation or extraction — and always according to the product's safety data sheet.

§Safe arrangement of the dyeing area

Efter bejdsning

The part must be rinsed thoroughly so no acid residues remain, which could later corrode the surface or attack tools and skin at the next handling. Used pickling fluid is hazardous waste and must not be poured down the drain; it is collected and disposed of correctly. Good order at the pickling station — labeled containers, dry floors, separated chemicals — is as important as the handling itself.

The acid doesn't distinguish between oxide and skin — respect and protective equipment are not negotiable.
