Cooling and lubrication system — the engine's lifelines
Oil and coolant are structural components, not just fluids
Inspection and repair of cooling and lubrication systems are written directly into the competence goals for car mechanics, and there is a good reason: most serious engine damage starts as a small fault in one of the two systems. A stuck thermostat or an oil filter that never gets changed can end up as a total loss engine. As a mechanic you must both be able to service the systems correctly and recognize the early warning signs.
§Motor oil does four things at once
- 01Lubricates — forms an oil film between moving parts so metal doesn't touch metal.
- 02Cooler — carries heat away from pistons and bearings where coolant does not reach.
- 03Cleanser – keeps soot and wear particles suspended until the filter catches them.
- 04Protects — additives prevent corrosion and deposits.
Oil is never chosen by instinct. The viscosity class according to the SAE system — e.g. 5W-30, where the number before W (winter) describes the cold properties and the number after describes the viscosity at operating temperature — must suit the engine. In addition there are quality specifications from ACEA and API as well as the car manufacturers' own approval standards, which are found in the instruction manual and workshop data. Modern engines with particle filters often require so-called low-SAPS oils with low ash content; wrong oil can clog the filter.
§The cooling system — more than a radiator
The cooling system keeps the engine at operating temperature — neither more nor less. The water pump circulates the fluid, the thermostat keeps the small circulation closed around the engine until operating temperature is reached, then opens for the large circulation through the radiator. The pressure cap keeps the system under pressure, which raises the fluid's boiling point. The coolant is typically a mixture of water and ethylene glycol with corrosion-inhibiting additives — the mixing ratio and fluid type must follow the manufacturer's specification, and different coolant types must not generally be mixed.
The warning signs you should respond to

Safety matters: Never open the pressure cap on a hot engine. The system is under pressure and boiling coolant can spray out and cause serious burns. Let the engine cool or open carefully in stages with a cloth over the cap when the temperature has dropped.
§Service is documentation
Oil change and coolant check are routine, but routine must never become sloppy. Note oil type, quantity and mileage, reset the service indicator, and check for leaks after test drive. Spilled oil, used filters and old coolant are hazardous waste and must be collected separately and delivered to an approved receiver — this is required by environmental regulations and is part of the environmentally conscious work the education requires.
