Why tyres are the car's only road contact, and how air conditioning works

Tires and air conditioning work like everyday things but both have great importance. The tires are the car's only road contact and the air conditioner works with a closed cooling circuit under pressure. Both require the mechanic to know what's safe and professionally correct.

§Tires — the car's only road contact.

All steering, acceleration and braking happens through the tire's contact surfaces with the road. A worn, incorrectly inflated or incorrectly selected tire reduces both road grip and braking distance, especially in wet conditions. Therefore, tire inspection is not a trifle: tread depth, wear pattern, age and pressure together tell whether the tire is safe to drive on.

What you check on a tyre

  • 01Pattern depth — check against the legal limit and manufacturer's recommendation.
  • 02Wear pattern — one-sided or centre/edge wear reveals incorrect pressure or wheel position.
  • 03Tire pressure — adjust to manufacturer's specification, preferably with cold tires.
  • 04Damage — dents cuts nails and cracks in sidewall or tread.
  • 05Correct tyre type and size for season and vehicle specification.

At wheel change, the wheel must be balanced so the car does not vibrate at speed and the wheel bolts are tightened to the manufacturer's torque. Remember that summer and winter tyres have different properties and must suit the season to give the best grip.

§The air conditioning unit — a closed cooling circuit

The vehicle's air conditioning cools and dehumidifies the cabin air by allowing a refrigerant to cycle between liquid and gas in a closed loop. A compressor pressurizes the refrigerant; it releases heat in the condenser, and when it is allowed to expand again in the evaporator, it absorbs heat from the cabin air. This heat absorption is what you feel as cold air from the vents.

§Common climate problems

When a facility doesn't cool well, the cause can be too little refrigerant due to a leak, a faulty compressor, or a dirty cabin or evaporator surface. An unpleasant smell is often caused by bacteria in the evaporator and a clogged cabin filter. Many climate problems therefore involve ordinary service—but the cooling circuit itself must always be handled professionally and safely.
