How electricity is produced, stored and distributed in the car
Even a mechanically well-run car stands still if the electrical system fails. Power starts the engine keeps control units running and drives everything from lights to windows. As a mechanic you must understand how power is produced stored and distributed and be able to measure your way to where in the circuit a fault is.
§The battery stores the energy
The starter battery provides the current needed to start the engine and smooths out consumption when the engine is not running. It is not an inexhaustible source: a battery that is discharged, old, or cold cannot supply the power the starter requires. A battery is judged on both resting voltage and how the voltage holds under load.
§The generator charges during driving
When the engine runs, it drives the generator, which charges the battery and supplies the car's consumers. The generator must deliver a stable charging voltage within the range the manufacturer specifies—too low voltage drains the battery over time, too high can boil it. A lit battery light while driving often points to the charging system, e.g., a faulty generator or a broken/worn belt.
The starting system
When the driver starts, the starter interlock and relay send power to the starter motor, which turns the engine until it takes over. If it just clicks or the motor turns slowly, it often points to a weak battery, poor connections, or a faulty starter. Here too applies the rule: measure your way forward rather than guessing.
§Systematic work with electrical faults
- 01Start with the battery's condition and connections – many electrical errors are caused by poor contact or corrosion.
- 02Check ground connections; a poor ground gives the most confusing errors.
- 03Use a multimeter to measure voltage, voltage drop and resistance rather than guessing.
- 04Follow the circuit diagram rather than pulling wires randomly.
- 05Check fuses and relays for the current circuit.
§Safety and care
A discharged battery gives off flammable gas and a short circuit can give sparks fire or burns. Avoid creating a short circuit with tools across the battery poles and be aware that modern cars may have live systems you do not immediately see. If you understand the basic principles — source storage circuit and consumer — you can work both safely and systematically.
