Work environment at the auto workshop — body and chemistry

Heavy lifting, working postures, exhaust gas and chemical risk assessment

The learning outcomes require that you perform work based on current safety and workplace regulations — and in an auto workshop it is not just talk. The strains are concrete: heavy components, work with arms overhead, chemicals on skin, noise from pneumatic tools and exhaust gas in enclosed spaces. The damage that follows rarely comes as a single accident; it comes creeping over years. Therefore, good habits must be established during apprenticeship.

§Body: lifting, postures and aids

Gearboxes, wheels with rims, batteries and brake discs are heavy, and they often need to be handled in awkward positions. The Work Environment Authority's guidance on lifting, pulling and pushing is the reference: the weight of the load, the distance from the body and the work posture together determine the load, and heavy or awkward lifts must be addressed with technical aids. On the workshop this means a gearbox lift under the car, a wheel lift for large wheels, a crane for engines and hand trucks for heavy parts — and setting the lift to the correct working height instead of working bent or with arms stretched overhead for long periods.

§Chemistry: risk assessment and skin

Motor oil, brake fluid, coolant, brake cleaner, degreaser and soldering/adhesive products are chemical substances that the employer must map in a chemical risk assessment under the rules for working with substances and materials. The assessment must result in concrete instructions: where is the product used, what protective equipment is needed, and what do you do in case of accident. As an employee you have the right to that instruction — and a duty to follow it.

The accidents that can be prevented tomorrow early.

The most common acute injuries in workshops are falls and stumbles on slippery or cluttered floors crushing injuries when handling heavy parts and injuries from hand tools. The remedy is mundane and effective: spills are wiped up immediately walkways kept clear tools put away and a car lifted on a jack is ALWAYS supported with axle stands before anyone works under it. The jack is a lifting tool — not a support.

Work environment is also organization: the workshop must have a workplace assessment (APV) and apprentices are entitled to thorough instruction before being put to new work. Speak up if you are in doubt — it is not a sign of weakness it is exactly the behavior the rules and the good master expect.

You must be able to sustain the trade for forty years — it starts with how you lift today.
