ADAS — driver assistance systems and calibration

Cameras and radars must be calibrated when you have worked on the car

ADAS stands for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. It covers everything from automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control to lane keeping assist and driver fatigue detection. With the EU's safety regulation 2019/2144 (General Safety Regulation), a package of systems became mandatory: requirements applied to new vehicle types from July 2022 and all newly registered vehicles from July 2024. This means that the vehicles arriving at the workshop in the coming years will increasingly have cameras, radars and sensors, for which YOU take responsibility that they work correctly when the vehicle leaves the workshop.

§What do the EU regulations require?

  • 02Advanced Emergency Braking (AEB) — from July 2024 with Requirements for Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection.
  • 03Emergency lane keeping / lane keeping assist.
  • 04Fatigue monitoring and attention warning.
  • 05Reverse Detection (Camera or Sensors) and Brake Light.
  • 06Event Data Recorders (EDR)—the vehicle's 'black box' that stores data around a collision.

The systems are built on a sensing system: front camera behind the windscreen, radar at front and corners, ultrasonic sensors in bumpers and increasingly cameras all the way around. The control units fuse data from multiple sensors, and therefore a single misaligned sensor is enough for the entire system to react incorrectly — or shut down.

§Why calibration is safety-critical

A front camera pointing even half a degree wrong sees the lane offset — and a radar mounted crooked after a bumper repair judges distances wrong. The error is invisible in everyday life until the system needs to react. That is why car manufacturers prescribe calibration when certain work is done, and it is the workshop's responsibility to get it done and documented.

The prerequisites are half the work: correct tyre pressure correct wheel alignment no load in the car and a setup area that meets the manufacturer's requirements for space and light. A calibration performed on a skewed floor is worse than no calibration because it gives the system a false reference point — and driver and workshop false confidence.

§Documentation and professionalism

The calibration is completed with a report from the diagnostic tool which is saved on the work order – it is your documentation that the system was in order when the car left the workshop. Also tell the customer what has been done and that assistant systems never relieve the driver of responsibility. For you as an apprentice ADAS is one of the areas where the trade is moving fastest and where knowledge of technological development – which the learning objectives also require – pays off directly in daily work.

The car brakes by itself for a pedestrian — but only if the camera sees the world as it is. It is your craftsmanship that ensures it.
