§Study guidance: media designer

The craft combines aesthetic handcraft with technical precision. You must be able to both form a message visually and deliver error-free files for print and screen. Train your eye by seeing critically at good graphics around you, and train your technique by doing complete assignments from brief to finished file.

Important concepts you should be able to

  • 01Typography: serif/sans-serif, hierarchy, line spacing and readability
  • 02Layout: grid, margins, columns, and whitespace
  • 03The color on the work clothes.
  • 04Images: resolution, raster vs. vector
  • 05File formats: working format versus export format
  • 06Print preparation: preflight, bleed and trim marks
  • 07Workflow: brief, correction, approval, delivery and archiving
  • 08Copyright and licences on images and fonts

Good habits and preparation

Set up documents correctly from the start (colour space, format, grid), keep layers and filenames in order, and always save both export file and editable working document. Proofread and get approvals in writing. Practice justifying your choices — why exactly this font, colour or composition — because that's what separates a designer from someone who just moves elements around.

Where you can read more

Use the school's teaching material and programmes' own documentation and tutorials to learn the tools. Study good books on typography and graphic design, and analyse professional work in magazines, posters and digital surfaces. The industry's professional organisations and your apprenticeship site are good sources for practice regarding printing, deliveries and cooperation with printers.
