Standard solution: setting up a colour-driven workflow

Fixed choices that make color the same from screen to print.

Color surprises at print almost always occur because color management wasn't in place from the start. Set the workflow up right once and let it apply to all tasks so you can trust what you see and deliver what you promised.

§1. Get the screen to tell the truth

  • 01Calibrate the screen, preferably with a measuring instrument.
  • 02Work in uniform, neutral room lighting — not in changing daylight.
  • 03Repeat calibration regularly; screens change over time.

§2. Set colour space and profiles

  • 01Choose an appropriate working colour space for the task's final medium.
  • 02Make sure that the programmes have uniform colour settings.
  • 03Embed colour profiles in files so colour can be read correctly by the recipient.

§3. Clarify with the printer

  • 01Ask about the printer's desired colour profile and print standard.
  • 02Clarify printing technology limits (e.g. total colour amount, black build-up).
  • 03Note the requirements so the entire project works towards the same goal.

§4. Softproof and check

  • 01Softproof the file through the print shop's output profile before delivery.
  • 02Choose rendering intent based on whether the material is photos or graphics.
  • 03Check critical colours and surfaces before sending file.
