Checklist: safe operation of rotating machines

The basic rules that keep your fingers and eyes safe

Most serious injuries in the trade occur because a single basic rule was skipped in a busy moment. Make these habits something you don't deviate from.

§Before you start

  • 01Check that barriers and safety equipment are in place
  • 02Use eye protection, hearing protection and tight clothing without loose parts
  • 03Make sure that the material is securely clamped or supported
  • 04Know the machine and its emergency stop before you start it

§During the work.

  • 01Keep hands away from the cutting area
  • 02Use a feed helper instead of fingers
  • 03Stand correctly and maintain balance — don't get caught out of position
  • 04Be attentive and don't let yourself be distracted in the middle of a cut

§When you touch piece or tool

  • 01Switch off the machine and wait until it comes to a complete stop
  • 02Never reach in while the tool is still running
  • 03Keep the machine area clean and tidy
