How the day flows in different types of facilities

From project outline to finished journeyman work

After several years of alternation between school and practice, the training as a machine carpenter ends with a journeyman exam. Unlike some other crafts, the journeyman exam for machine carpenters, furniture carpenters, and building carpenters is a project journeyman exam — meaning you largely decide what the journeyman piece should be within the frameworks set by the education.

§The project proposal and the deadline

According to Snedkernes Uddannelser, the student must submit a project proposal to the school no later than 14 days before the start of the last school period. The proposal consists, among other things, of a dimensioned construction drawing that must be approved by the school before the final school period begins. This means that preparation for the journeyman's test actually begins long before the last school day arrives.

  • 01Project proposal with dimensioned construction drawing must be submitted no later than 14 days before the last school period
  • 02The school approves the proposal before the last school period starts
  • 03The journeyman's piece itself is executed and completed during the final period
  • 04Examiners assess the finished result against the approved project proposal

§What is assessed?

Because the project is self-chosen within the framework, assessment is largely about how precisely the task is completed in relation to what you yourself have proposed and approved. The masters — experienced professionals appointed to judge journeyman exams — assess craftsmanship quality, whether measurements and joints are executed correctly, and whether you have managed to plan and execute the project from idea to finished product.

§Why the form makes sense for exactly this trade

Because the machine carpentry trade spans from furniture to sheet metal furniture to windows and building components, one fixed task for everyone could never reflect the professional breadth the education covers. The project-based form provides an opportunity for you to make a journeyman piece that matches the direction within the trade you are most passionate about — and which at the same time demonstrates that you can independently plan, document, and carry out a complex task as required by the highest competency goals of the ordinance (§ 4, no. 39, 40 and 44).

§After the journeyman exam

When the journeyman test is passed, you receive your journeyman certificate and the title of trained cabinetmaker. Some of the best journeyman tests are awarded prizes each year by Cabinetmakers' Education, which is both recognition for the individual and a display window for how high the level in the trade can be set when the project is self-chosen.

The journeyman's exam doesn't ask if you can follow a recipe — it asks if you can write one yourself, and then follow it to the letter.
