The machine carpenter makes many of the things we surround ourselves with every day — furniture windows doors kitchens and built-in fixtures. It is an industry trade where craft meets machines and production giving the trade a broad reach in the job market.
§Where machine wood workers work
Most machine carpenters work in companies that manufacture products in wood and sheet materials — from large furniture factories to window and door producers and specialist workshops. Some also work in carpentry and joinery companies and some move later toward tasks in production planning, machine programming and quality assurance.

§Demand for skilled hands
The industry has needed skilled workers for a long time and trades that combine craftsmanship with understanding of machines and production are in demand. The need fluctuates with the economy — furniture and construction industries are sensitive to the economy — but furniture, windows and fittings are constantly being produced and it gives the trade a stable foundation.
§Automation and CNC
Production has become more automated. CNC machines and robots that cut and mill according to a digital drawing are widespread, especially in larger companies. This does not mean the trade disappears — someone must set up the machines, program them, choose materials and ensure quality. It just shifts some of the work from pure manual labor to controlling and monitoring the machines.
§Sustainable wood and energy renovation
Wood is a renewable material, and the increasing focus on sustainable building is driving more use of wood — good news for a trade that lives off processing it. At the same time, energy renovation creates work for window and door manufacturers, because new, tight windows and doors are one of the most important ways to save energy in buildings.
§A trade with multiple directions
Because the programme can be completed as either the full joinery worker or as a production assistant in furniture or doors and windows, you can tailor your path according to what appeals to you. And because the trade lies close to the other joinery trades, there are related directions nearby if your interests shift later in working life.
