Checklist: prepare a measuring and cutting job
How to ensure dimensions and material are in place before you cut
Most waste in the trades happens because something was cut wrong. A moment extra on measurements often saves hours and expensive material.
§Dimensions and drawing
- 01Understand what the finished workpiece must be able to do and fit
- 02Measure carefully — and check them one more time
- 03Clearly mark where it should be cut
- 04Account for the fact that wood moves and moisture causes expansion
§Material
- 01Choose the right material type for the purpose
- 02Check material for defects, knots or damage
- 03Make sure that you have enough material before you start
§Tools and workplace
- 01Make sure that the cutting tool is sharp and in order
- 02Clear the work area so the material can lie flat and free
- 03Have protective equipment ready for the material you are working with
