Boat builder or sailmaker — and the many directions and paths the trades encompass
The maritime crafts are small but deep trades where you choose one of two specializations and from there can go in several directions. What is shared is that you work with something that must be able to withstand the sea — and that skilled craftsmanship is the trade's pride.
§Boat builder
As a boat builder you build, maintain and repair boats in both wood and fibreglass. You manufacture hulls, fit out cabins and cockpits, install engines, winches and equipment and equip the boat with what is necessary. Some boat builders work primarily with new builds, others with repair and restoration — including classic wooden boats where the old craft is kept alive. It is a trade for those who like to see a whole thing come together under their hands.
§Sailmaker
As a sailmaker you make sails awnings tarpaulins and work with rope and rigging. You take measurements choose materials cut the fabric and sew and assemble the parts into finished sails often with the computer's help to calculate the shape. Some sailmakers specialise in sails for racing where precise shape means speed others in robust sails and awnings for everyday use. It is a trade where small details in shape and seams determine the result.

§A niche with demand
The maritime trades are small and precisely because a skilled boat builder or sail maker can be in demand. There are always boats and sails that need maintenance and repair and customers looking for quality you cannot mass produce. The one who becomes really good can find a place where craftsmanship is valued.
§The ways forward
With experience you can become the one who handles setup and programming of difficult tasks become team leader or production manager or specialise in a specific product area. Because the trade becomes increasingly technological there are good opportunities for those who know both the craft and want to keep up with technical development.
