Floor load in the cargo area

May the collar stand directly on the floor in the hold, or is a spreader needed?

Answer: A heavy package with a small base, eg a motor on a frame or a machine part on four feet, can dent or break the cargo floor even if the plane's total load limit is far away. Each aircraft type has a limit for area loading in kg per m², which is in the aircraft type's Weight & Balance Manual or in the airline's load manual. The calculator divides the package's weight by the area that touches the floor and shows how large a spreader (eg a board or planks) must go underneath if the limit is exceeded. The limit is the user's own figure from the manual. The standard value is the limit for the bulk cargo compartment in a Boeing 737.

Formula

Validity and source

Source
Aircraft type's Weight & Balance Manual (area loading in kg/m²); example: Boeing 737 bulk cargo compartment 732 kg/m² (ANA Cargo Dimension Guide)

Does not apply when

  • The contact surface is what actually touches the floor: four feet at 10 × 10 cm is 0.04 m², not the whole box bottom. Cargo holds also have limits for running load (kg per metre) and total weight per section. They are in the same manual and must also be followed. Always follow the airline's loading manual and loadcontrol.

Step by step

  1. Find kolliets vægt.
  3. Del vægten med fladen i m².

  • At glemme sprederens egen vægt.
  • At bruge grænsen fra en anden flytype.
  • At glemme grænsen for løbende last pr. meter.

Examples from everyday life

Parcel weight
180 kg
Contact surface length (what touches the floor)
40 cm
Contact surface width
40 cm
Cargo space limit for area load (from manual)
732 kg/m²

Parcel weight
420 kg
Contact surface length (what touches the floor)
120 cm
Contact surface width
80 cm
Cargo space limit for area load (from manual)
732 kg/m²

Parcel weight
320 kg
Contact surface length (what touches the floor)
20 cm
Contact surface width
20 cm
Cargo space limit for area load (from manual)
732 kg/m²

It means: Belastningen er 8,000 kg/m², altså 1,093 % af grænsen. Fødderne kan skade gulvet. Kolliet skal stå på mindst 0.44 m².

Rule of thumb

Ved 732 kg/m² må hver 10 × 10 cm højst bære ca. 7 kg.

How to check the answer
