Standard solution: controlled DPF regeneration at the workshop

Safe procedure when particle filter does not regenerate on its own

Use this standard solution when a diesel particulate filter is full of soot and has not been able to regenerate during normal driving. Always follow the manufacturer's procedure for the specific vehicle, and remember that regeneration produces high temperatures in the exhaust.

§Before regeneration

  • 01Read off the fault codes and soot load, and assess whether the filter can be regenerated or must be cleaned/replaced.
  • 02Check prerequisites: sufficient fuel, correct oil and no blocking errors
  • 03Find the underlying cause of the sooting — e.g. driving pattern, EGR error or poor combustion.
  • 04Look up the manufacturer's procedure and assumptions for controlled regeneration.

§During regeneration

  • 01Place the vehicle safely with extraction and without flammables nearby.
  • 02Start your EOP preparation early: topic selection and problem formulation take longer than you think
  • 03Monitor temperature and progress, and stop if something deviates from the expected.
  • 04Let the process run to completion — don't interrupt a regeneration halfway without reason.

§After regeneration

  • 01Check and discard damaged elements — record in log.
  • 02Fix the underlying cause so the filter does not clog immediately again.
  • 03Test run and confirm that warning and effect limitation has stopped.
  • 04Document the regeneration, findings and the corrected cause.
