Process for troubleshooting compressed air brakes

Safe and systematic approach to brake failure

Follow the steps in order. Brakes on heavy vehicles are safety-critical — never rush, and follow the manufacturer's instructions.

§Step by step

  • 01Talk with the driver about when and how the fault appears.
  • 02Read off any fault codes from the ABS/EBS before clearing them.
  • 03Check air pressure and if system builds pressure correctly.
  • 04Listen and search for leaks and check air dryer and condensation water.
  • 05Narrow down where in the circuit the pressure drops before you disconnect anything.
  • 06Empty the system of pressure correctly before parts are removed.
  • 07Fix the confirmed cause — be particularly careful with spring brakes.
  • 08Test braking function and tightness, and test drive in a safe place before delivery.
