Systematic troubleshooting on heavy vehicles

A heavy vehicle is a collection of systems working together: engine, transmission, air brakes, hydraulics, electronics, and body. A symptom—such as power loss, a warning light, or a strange sound—may come from several of them. Troubleshooting is therefore about creating an overview and narrowing down the system before diving into the details.

§Start with the symptom, not the parts

The fastest way to a wrong repair is to guess at a part and replace it. Instead begin by understanding the symptom: when does it occur, under what conditions, cold or hot, with or without load? The driver's description is worth gold because they feel the vehicle every day and often notice when something changed.

§Narrow down the system

When you have the symptom narrow down which system the fault most likely belongs to. A power loss could be engine fuel turbo or aftertreatment; a brake warning could be compressed air wear or electronics. Use the vehicle's built-in diagnostics and fault codes to point you in direction — but remember a code is a hint not an answer sheet just like on passenger cars.

A structured procedure

  • 01Collect the symptoms thoroughly and talk to the driver.
  • 02Read off the fault codes from the relevant control units and note them down.
  • 03Determine which system the fault likely belongs to.
  • 04Formulate a hypothesis and test it with measurements.
  • 05Empty compressed air and hydraulics of pressure before separating anything.
  • 06Fix the confirmed cause — not the first thing that looks like it.
  • 07Test the function, clear codes and check that the fault is gone.

§When the systems work together

The difficult thing about heavy vehicles is often that the systems are interconnected: the electronics control the engine the engine drives the compressor and hydraulic pump and a single error can give symptoms in several places. The better you understand the connections the faster you can separate cause from effect — and that is where the experienced troubleshooter differs from the one who changes parts blindly.
