Career paths and journeyman exam as truck mechanic

Truck mechanic training is a vocational education where you alternate between school and practice as an apprentice at a workshop. The education is aimed at service, maintenance and repair of vehicles over 3,500 kg — i.e. trucks, buses, semi-trailers and other heavy equipment — and covers both classical mechanics and ongoing development in engine technology, control systems, alternative fuels and transmission.

§The way into the trade

Most start on a basic course at a vocational school but the qualification can also be started later in life. There are special courses for adults over 25 years old (EUV — vocational training for adults) where previous experience and education can shorten the course. The qualification can also be taken as EUX where a vocational academic level is combined with the vocational qualification and as a talent track for students wanting an academic boost along the way.

§Apprenticeship and apprenticeship program

Most of the training takes place as practice at a company — typically a workshop specializing in lorries, buses or construction equipment. Here you work under training with experienced mechanics, while through school visits you learn the theoretical background for what you see in practice. The combination of school and practice is the core of the Danish vocational training model and ensures that you both understand the theory and can perform the work in practice when you are fully trained.

§After the journeyman certificate

With the journeyman's certificate in hand you can specialise — for example in certain makes in electronics and diagnostics in hydraulics and superstructure equipment or in the growing group of electric vehicles. Many move on to roles such as workshop manager or service manager where responsibility expands from the single vehicle to planning and running the workshop's overall operation. Some choose over time to further educate themselves further or start their own workshop.
