Post-treatment of exhaust — EGR, DPF, and SCR/AdBlue

How the modern diesel engine cleans its own exhaust

A modern heavy diesel engine can no longer just burn fuel and let exhaust out. It must meet strict emissions requirements and that requires the exhaust to be cleaned after it leaves the engine. Three systems work together on this: EGR the diesel particulate filter (DPF) and the SCR catalyst with AdBlue. As a truck mechanic you need to understand what each system does and why they are sensitive to neglected maintenance.

§EGR — exhaust gas recirculation.

EGR stands for exhaust gas recirculation. Part of the exhaust gas is fed back into the intake and burns again. This lowers the combustion temperature, and lower combustion temperature produces fewer nitrogen oxides (NOx) because NOx is formed at high temperature. Over time, the EGR valve and its cooler can become clogged with soot, which causes rough running, loss of power and fault codes.

§DPF — the diesel particulate filter

The diesel particulate filter traps soot particles from combustion so they don't escape into the air. The filter gradually fills with soot and must be cleaned by regeneration: the engine control raises the temperature in the filter so the soot burns off and becomes a small amount of ash. Regeneration often happens automatically while driving but much short-distance or idle driving can prevent the filter from reaching temperature — then it blocks and the engine reports an error.

§SCR and AdBlue — chemical removal of NOx

SCR stands for selective catalytic reduction. Here an additive — AdBlue an aqueous urea solution — is sprayed into the exhaust before a catalyst. AdBlue releases ammonia which in the catalyst reacts with nitrogen oxides and converts them into harmless nitrogen and water. SCR is very effective against NOx and is a main reason why modern heavy diesel engines can meet emission requirements. This requires AdBlue on the tank and that the dosing system works.

  • 01AdBlue is a consumable — the level must be maintained, and the tank has its own filling point.
  • 02AdBlue crystallizes and can clog nozzles; dosing is sensitive to impurities.
  • 03Sooty EGR, clogged DPF or SCR failure typically triggers a warning light and often reduced engine power.
  • 04Many paints contain metal or pearl particles that change appearance depending on light and viewing angle. Here, the application technique is just as important as the mixture — how the particles settle determines the effect.
  • 05Use clean tools and clean containers when working on the AdBlue system.

§When the systems fit together

EGR, DPF and SCR are not independent. EGR lowers NOx already in the engine, so SCR doesn't have to remove as much; good combustion produces less soot for the DPF. A fault in one place propagates: poor combustion clogs the DPF, and a defective SCR gives too high NOx. The skilled diagnostician sees the aftertreatment as a whole and links the symptom — smoke, loss of power, warning light — to the right link in the chain.

§The mechanic's role

You must be able to read error codes from the aftertreatment system, assess DPF condition, correctly perform or initiate regeneration, and check AdBlue dosing. Equally important is explaining to the customer how driving patterns and timely service keep the systems healthy. Correct aftertreatment is both a legal requirement and a professional responsibility to the environment.
