Why diesel drives heavy transport

Almost all heavy transport is powered by diesel engines. They are powerful, durable and efficient at the large loads and long distances trucks drive. As a heavy vehicle mechanic you work daily with engines built to run many hundreds of thousands of kilometres and you must understand what keeps them running and what wears them down.

§The diesel principle

A diesel engine draws in clean air and compresses it so powerfully that it becomes very hot. Only then is fuel sprayed in and it self-ignites from the heat. So there is no spark plug; combustion is controlled by when and how fuel is injected. The high compression gives the diesel engine its power and efficiency but also places great demands on engine parts.

§High-pressure injection

Modern diesel engines dose fuel with great precision at very high pressure, often in multiple injections per working cycle. This gives cleaner combustion and a smoother running. The injection system is sensitive to dirt and water in the fuel, so fuel filter and water separator are important to maintain — dirty fuel is a common cause of expensive faults.

§Turbocharging

Most heavy diesel engines are turbocharged. The turbocharger uses the energy in the hot exhaust gases to force more air into the engine so more fuel can be burned and more power developed from the same engine size. A turbo works at high temperatures and rpm and depends on clean oil and proper lubrication — if oil service is neglected the turbo is often the first to suffer.

§The mechanic's role

You rarely meet a diesel engine that's worn out by kilometers alone — more often problems are caused by neglected service, dirty fuel, or faults in one of the auxiliary systems. By understanding the connection between air, fuel, compression, and aftertreatment, you can link a symptom like smoke, power loss, or hard starting to the probable cause and act decisively.
