Checklist: safe work at slurry tank and agitation
Use the list every time there is to be stirring, pumping or work at a slurry tank
Review this checklist before you start stirring, pumping or other work where manure can release gas. If you skip a point, you skip a safety measure.
§Before you start
- 01Has a plan been made for when and how stirring/pumping occurs, and does another person know about it?
- 02Have the animals been removed from the area if it is practically possible?
- 03Is the padding even, firm and symmetrical?
- 04Is there access to a gas meter/gas detector if the business has a closed room or a pit that needs to be entered?
§During stirring/pumping.
- 01Always start carefully and gradually – avoid setting the whole quantity in motion at once.
- 02Keep yourself and others away from open hatches, gratings and ventilation openings the first few minutes.
- 03Are there people, animals, or children nearby who do not know that work with manure is happening right now?
- 04Stop immediately if anyone feels dizzy, unwell, or strong odour.
§Access to closed spaces, sumps and tanks
- 01Never go in yourself to rescue a person or animal without protection. Call 112, keep your distance, and let the rescue service go in with the right equipment.
- 02Always use safety line and a spotter outside.
- 03Measure gas content before anyone enters the room — even for short errands.
- 04If the room has been closed for a long time, it must be ventilated thoroughly before anyone enters.
§After work
- 01Has the floating layer/cover been re-established on the tank after treatment?
- 02Has the area around pumps, hoses and equipment been cleared?
- 03Are any deviations or near-misses noted and reported?
