Agricultural machinery and safety in the field

Machines are the backbone of modern farming. The tractor is the central driving force and a range of implements are attached to it to perform soil cultivation sowing fertilising spraying and harvesting. Being able to operate maintain and use machines safely is a core competence for the farmer.

Well-maintained machinery lasts longer and fails less often at critical times. Daily inspection includes checking oil level, coolant, tires, lights, and lubricating moving parts, among other things. Pre-season inspection and cleaning after use prevent breakdowns and extend machinery life.

Agriculture is an industry with many and often serious work accidents. Many accidents happen when boarding and alighting, when working under lifted implements or when in contact with moving parts. Therefore, good routines and respect for machines are crucial.

• 01Stop the engine and remove the ignition key before working on moving parts.
• 02Mechanically support lifted tools—never rely only on hydraulics.
• 03Use hearing protection during noisy work and appropriate work clothing without loose parts.
• 04Never take passengers on the tractor unless there is an approved seat.
• 05Be particularly alert when children are on the farm.

For driving larger tractors and certain machines, the right driving licence is required, and you must know the rules for transport on public roads, including marking and speed limits for agricultural vehicles.
