Checklist: safe manual handling and lifting
Use it before you lift, pull or push a load
§Before the lift
- 01Know the weight of the load if possible.
- 02Plan your route BEFORE departure so you know when to break and rest — it's easier than solving it on the way with a tachograph ticking.
- 03Assess whether an aid should be used instead of carrying.
- 04Ask for help with heavy or awkward loads.
§During the lift.
- 01Stand with good foot position close to the load.
- 02Bend at the knees and keep your back straight.
- 03Keep the load close to your body.
- 04Avoid twisting the back—turn with your feet.
§With repeated or one-sided work
- 01Change working posture and tasks, where possible.
- 02Keep short breaks during the shift.
- 03Report early symptoms of pain or discomfort immediately.
§Assistive devices
- 01Use pallet lifts, trucks or hand trucks instead of carrying.
- 02Use a lifting boom or crane for heavy or unwieldy objects.
- 03Check material for defects, knots or damage
